Assuming you have decided on getting a parrot as a pet, what kind of parrot do the best pet?
I am often asked this question.
Me like to turn it around and ask what kind of pet owner are you? Parrots can live to 70 years, some even more. Are you willing to do what is literally a lifetime commitment?
Parrots are social birds and need companionship and attention. Are you willing to give up that time to keep your pet happy? Although you may need less attention than, say, a dog, you can not lock up the house and leave a parrot on his own for more than a day or two.
There really is no easy answer to choose what type of parrot. It's a bit like asking what kind of car you should drive or what kind film to be seen. It comes down to personal circumstances and preferences.
The easiest type of care, of course, the humble budgerigar. These can be tamed and trained much bigger like a parrot and make great companions for low maintenance, especially for children, but rarely speaks.
At the other extreme is the African gray, these are smart and quickly collect a large vocabulary. They also need more attention and live longer. These parrots are especially popular for its remarkable mimicry and intelligence. Although each individual can vary, it is common to have a vocabulary of several hundred words.
Ringneck parrots and Amazon parrots also make good pets, living about 20 years. Your diet should be varied and include plenty of vegetables. It's not as talkative as the gray African parrots can still develop a large vocabulary.
Blue and gold macaws, parakeets or most others are also worthy of consideration. They have beautiful plumage and, in general, a relaxed personality.
Cockatoos are another good option if your funds are limited. Although some are more reluctant to speak to do as some other species.
Take time to make the decision and talk with other parrot owners about their experiences. You can also want to know if there is a local parrot rescue near you. that will give good advice and you may also be able to adopt a parrot to a much lower cost that the purchase of a young bird.
