Careful planning is needed to build a sauna from scratch.
Here is a summary of the steps:
 • purchase or design plans
 • find / buy the wood
 • Carefully measure and cut the wood or have a professional do it for you
 • gather all the pieces, including the door, the heater and the bank
Location
An important consideration when building a sauna is location. That's the main thing that will influence the design of the sauna.
 • Will you convert an existing room?
 • Will it be independent?
• A Do you want inside or outside your home?
 • Will you be in town or country?
When you set the location, you have to decide which type of sauna heater to use.
Depending on where you are the sauna, you can not have much of a choice.
Choosing a sauna heater
Electric sauna heaters are the most popular choice. Obviously you need access to electricity if you use one.
If you are building a sauna in the country, a wood sauna heater may be your only option.
You can also buy a gas heater sauna, but are more expensive.
Professional installation is required and the sauna should be be ventilated. Gas heaters also require more than the removal of an electric heater.
Before making any final decision is best know local building codes first. For example, there may be an ordinance for their community that restricts the use of wood stoves sauna.
Sauna Construction
If you plan on converting an existing room in a home made sauna, you will need to take protective measures against moisture, which will come from the sauna. The room must be adequately insulated and are a vapor barrier to protect against damage.
You will to find-and-purchase or special order wood to be used, then you have to carefully measure and cut (or have a pro handle that part).
Unless the tongue buy-and-groove wood, you have to make the tongue and groove joints along the sides of timber for strength and watertight closures, and you need a tool special for that.
Of course, you also need a door to the sauna. The manufacturers come in different shapes and sizes.
You can also buy a bank for your sauna or you can build your own.
As you can see, building your own sauna is not easy, but it is doable!
